Okay. For £250 or if you pay £300, you can get an older Defy 2 or 3 although they'll be 2009-2010 models but the specs are good on them, mid range Shimano Tiagra which is reliable and light. For 150, I would think a retro road bike would be your best bet something like http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1039706.

Defy is the bike you need. It was built for that purpose. I'm still training to ride a proper full out racing bike so the Defy is good. Depends on your budget though. How much are you willing to spend?
